System Mechanic 7 prevents TUT from starting

27-January-2007

In mid-December 2006, last month, iolo Technologies released  System Mechanic 7  and  System Mechanic 7 Professional  which have been causing such problems that many users have resorted to uninstalling this previously much loved program.

System Mechanic 7, and its professional sibling, install a service,  the iolo DMV Service,  which, at the time of writing, simply behaves like a virus – there are no other words for it.  It stops programs from starting; the list is endless – read these examples :  Zone Alarm,  AJSystems,  Borland's Delphi programming environment,  Intuit's QuickBooks,  Essential PIM,  etc..., etc...,  and our own TUT program.  The behaviour of this program which, according to reports, injects foreign code into programs, is nothing other than virus-like in all its aspects, starting from the catastrophic effect it has on so many programs, to the fact that even if you uninstall System Mechanic 7 this program stays behind and continues its calamitous interference.

11-Feb-2007 Update :  After fixing the problem in version 7.1.5 of System Mechanic, iolo Technologies incredibly reintroduced it in version 7.1.6 yesterday,  so this page continues to be relevant.

Follow the steps below to solve the problem.

Disabling the  Iolo DMV Service :

a) Go to the Control Panel.
b) Double-click on  Administrative Tools.
c) Double-click on  Services.
d) Maximise the  Services  window and click on the  STANDARD  tab at the bottom of the window.
e) Locate the service called  iolo DMV Service.
f) Right-click on it and choose  Properties.  A window will open.
g) In the section called  Startup Type  change the setting to  DISABLED  as shown below :

h) Click  OK.
i) Close the  Services  window.
j) Reboot your PC.

k)

On reboot  TUT  should now work fine, and so will System Mechanic 7 which does not need this service to function properly.
