CA Internet Security 2007 problems |

6-December-2006
(updated
15-Jan-2007)
In mid-November 2006, last month, Computer Associates released a disastrous update to their
CA Internet Security 2007 suite which prevents a number of programs from opening, which stops some programs as they are running, with no reasons whatsoever,
which makes some previously successfully registered programs like
TUT suddenly say "Trial version has expired", which grinds a PC down to snail pace till it is rebooted, or which makes program open with
LP5 error while unpacking. For some users the behaviour of
CA Internet Security 2007 has been nothing short of astounding judging by
who
could open only 4 programs after installation. See also
, and
, and
(and there are many more).
All of the following Computer Associates products exhibit the problem :
CA Internet Security 2007, eTrust Pest Patrol, CA Anti-Spyware, and
Zone Alarm Anti-Spyware or AOL Spyware Doctor which are both made by CA.
TUT is one of the many programs that has been affected by this nightmarish update. Almost three weeks since the problems started Computer Associates have still not resolved the problem and we are receiving emails daily about this.
Some users have voted with their feet and asked for their money back, some have uninstalled
CA Internet Security 2007 and have reverted to the 2006 version.
On Monday 11-Dec-2006 we received, from a friendly IT company
in Australia, the workaround solution below. It is a kludge (one
should not have to do this for standard programs like Microsoft
Word!), but it does work.
On 15-Jan-2007 we evolved a different solution for AOL users, which is also listed below.

CA Internet Security 2007 / eTrust Pest Patrol 2007
The following solution (11-Dec-2006) is a workaround, which, so far, works for both AutoCAD and The Ultimate Troubleshooter
– it may therefore work for other programs : |
a) |
First, manually update your CA software (CA Internet Security 2007,
eTrust Pest Patrol, CA Anti-Spyware, and
Zone Alarm Anti-Spyware or AOL Spyware Doctor) as Computer Associates may have produced either a fix, or updated software which has fewer problems. |
b) |
Launch the CA Anti-Spyware (or any of the affected programs) program or choose
Advanced Settings from the CA Control Center. |
c) |
Click on the Modify link under EXCLUSIONS for the real time scanner. |
d) |
Browse to TUT which is normally found at
C:\Program Files\AnswersThatWork\Troubleshooter\UltimateTroubleshooter.exe. |
e) |
OK your way out. |
AOL Safety and Security Center (AOL users)
Unfortunately, if you have the AOL Safety and Security Center, the only solution is to uninstall the
AOL Anti-Spyware module of the Safety and Security Center and use one of the better anti-spyware programs, such as
Spybot which you can download from our
page.
The reason for this is that AOL Anti-Spyware is a
simple cut-down version of Computer Associates eTrust Pest Patrol, and because of
this it does not give the user the ability to exclude a specific program, e.g. TUT, from anti-spyware scanning.
To
uninstall AOL Anti-Spyware :
a) |
Go to the Control Panel. |
b) |
Open the "Add/Remove Programs" icon. |
c) |
Scroll down and highlight Safety and Security Center Uninstaller, as shown below : |

d) |
Click Change/Remove. |
e) |
On the next screen which displays, check AOL Spyware Protection, as shown below : |
f) |
Click Uninstall. |
g) |
Reboot your PC at the end of the uninstallation. |
h) |
On reboot, TUT should now work. |
